Martinje Festival

Young wine celebration throughout Croatia – November 11

Every year on November 11 - the St. Martin’s Day (patron saint of winemakers), many wine-producing regions in Croatia celebrate and enjoy the newly produced wine. As a tradition, grapes are blessed before they are made into wine. Every town celebrates in its own way, but they all have one thing in common: there is always plenty of good food, music, dance and delicious, young wine. Roasted goose with chestnuts and pumpkins, apple pies and poppy-seed rolls are some of the favorites with white and red wines that are offered in abundance. One of the more popular wine areas is around Zagreb, where many little towns produce their wine as well as brandy. Dugo Selo, a picturesque town close to Zagreb, has a long tradition in grape cultivation and wine production. Everything is done in old-fashioned way and celebration of Martinje lasts several days.
