AROMAS AND FLAVORS OF LOSINJ - Island of Mali Losinj, September 21 – October 20

This beautiful island in the Kvarner region celebrates during this month many different fruits, plants and herbs that grow in this mild Mediterranean climate. This event starts with celebration of figs (September 21 – October 5), where around 80 types of this fruit were grown for hundreds of years. Photo contest, culinary workshops, walks among fig trees and much more is planned for this event. On October 6 begins second part of this “aromas and flavors” festival, with days of myrtle and strawberry-tree. There are more than 230 kinds of herbs on Mali Losinj, and myrtle is one that is known world-wide, especially liquor made of it. There is a myth on the island that strawberry-tree that grows there has magical effects. It’s a tree with fruit that looks like berries, and in fall it changes color from yellow and orange to red. This part of festival offers similar activities to those during fig days.
